A faith without some doubts is like a human body without any antibodies in it. People who blithely go through life too busy or indifferent to ask hard questions about why they believe as they do will find themselves defenseless against either the experience of tragedy or the probing questions of a smart skeptic. A person’s faith can collapse almost overnight if she has failed over the years to listen patiently to her own doubts, which should only be discarded after long reflection. Believers should acknowledge and wrestle with doubts— not only their own but their friends’ and neighbors’. It is no longer sufficient to hold beliefs just because you inherited them. Only if you struggle long and hard with objections to your faith will you be able to provide grounds for your beliefs to skeptics, including yourself, that are plausible rather than ridiculous or offensive. And, just as important for our current situation, such a process will lead you, even after you come to a position of strong faith, to respect and understand those who doubt.
– Timothy Keller,  The Reason for God, Belief in an Age of Skepticism
That gives you a taste of the bible study we’re kicking off this week for High School Students. We’ll be working through Tim Keller’s The Reason For God. It’s an excellent book that approaches the topic of doubt and skepticism with carefulness and clarity. In the first half of the study, we’ll walk through the most common objections to faith:
  • There can’t just be one true religion
  • How could a good God allow suffering?
  • Christianity is a straitjacket
  • The church is responsible for so much injustice
  • How can a loving God send people to hell?
  • Science has disproved Christianity
  • You can’t take the bible literally
In the second half of our study series, we’ll attack it from a positive angle:
  • The clues of God
  • The knowledge of God
  • The problem of sin
  • Religion and the gospel
  • The (true) story of the cross
  • The reality of the resurrection
  • The dance of God
As I reflect on the years I’ve worked with teens, I find Keller’s observation to be spot on. It is those that have the courage to “struggle long and hard with objections” to their faith that most often find the grounds to soar in that same faith. These also end up being the most equipped, and most believable, in reaching out to a world full of skepticism. Too often young people, especially ones that grow up in a Christian home, are afraid of doubts. What will their parents think? What will the church think? What will their friends think? This pressure forces them to hide, bury, neglect the longing for answers, only to find the longing return years later in college, crippling their faith in Jesus.
Our prayer is this bible study will provide a safe place. A place to face doubts and questions head on and to discover the reasonableness, the delight, and the life long anchor of faith in Jesus. If you have a high school student, if you are a high school student, come out and join us as we examine The Reason For God.

We’ll discover that these books lay the foundation for understanding relationship with Yaweh while setting the trajectory for redemption in Christ.

SESSIONS:

  • Week 1 – What Is The Old Testament And How Do We Read It?
  • Week 2 – Genesis
  • Week 3 – Exodus
  • Week 4 – Leviticus
  • Week 5 – Numbers

Sunday School - Church History

CHURCH HISTORY: FROM PENTECOST TO THE THRONE

TEACHER: TONY HUY

DESCRIPTION: Do you know your own story? For two thousand years God has been writing it. From Pentecost to today, Jesus has not ceased to be faithful to his promise – to build His church. Few things enrich our faith as understanding how He’s done this in history. In this session, we’ll cover the church’s development, from early birth to ultimate power (from Pentecost to the Christian Empire, 33AD – 590AD)

SESSIONS:

  • Week 1 – Emerging from Judaism: Leaving Galilee for Rome
  • Week 2 – Fighting for Orthodoxy: Leaving traditions for councils
  • Week 3 – Forming The Word: Leaving collections for canon
  • Week 4 – Understanding Spirituality: Leaving simplicity for monasticism
  • Week 5 – Doing Church: Leaving house gatherings for papacy
  • Week 6 – Responding to Culture: Leaving suffering for dictating
